AWS has introduced a new mechanism called Reindexing-from-Snapshot (RFS) to simplify migration to Amazon OpenSearch Service. This method addresses critical concerns for production workload migrations.
- Minimizes performance impact on source clusters by using snapshots for migration
- Enables high-throughput data transfer by processing shards in parallel
- Supports multi-version upgrades across major OpenSearch/Elasticsearch versions
- Can migrate large datasets quickly (5 TiB in approximately 35 minutes)
- Preserves original document identifiers during migration
RFS is part of the Migration Assistant solution, offering a straightforward, cost-effective approach to migrating OpenSearch and Elasticsearch clusters to Amazon OpenSearch Service.
