Blog
This article discusses the history, current state, and future roadmap of the AWS CloudFormation Registry, highlighting the evolution of resource management and infrastructure as code (IaC) at AWS.
- Initially, CloudFormation resource coverage was limited and tightly coupled to the CloudFormation team
- In 2019, AWS introduced the CloudFormation Registry, allowing developers to create and manage private resource types
- By 2021, a public registry was launched for third-party partners to publish extensions
- The new resource model enables day-1 support for new AWS services and features
- AWS Cloud Control API was built on this new standardized resource model
The team is continuing to improve resource coverage, developer experience, and community engagement through GitHub repositories, a Discord server, and ongoing development of the CloudFormation CLI and plugins.
