How to upgrade Microsoft Windows Server 2012 with AWS Application Migration Service

Blog

This article explains how to upgrade Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 to newer versions using AWS Application Migration Service (AWS MGN) before end-of-support in October.

  • Migrate on-premises Windows servers to AWS with automatic OS upgrade during migration
  • Create IAM role with AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCore and AWSApplicationMigrationFullAccess permissions
  • Configure post-launch actions in AWS MGN to install SSM Agent and perform Windows upgrade
  • Specify target Windows version, IAM instance profile, and subnet ID in upgrade settings
  • Monitor post-launch actions in Migration dashboard during cutover process
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 requires two-step upgrade: first to 2012 R2, then to target version

AWS MGN automates Windows Server upgrades during migration, simplifying the end-of-support transition for on-premises workloads moving to AWS.
