Amazon ECS adds domainless gMSA authentication for Linux and Windows containers

News

This article announces Amazon ECS support for domainless Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) authentication on Linux and Windows containers running on EC2.

  • Containers can authenticate with Microsoft Active Directory without joining nodes to domain
  • Enables access to network shared resources like SQL Server and file-shares
  • Automatic password and service principal name management
  • Multiple containers can share a single AD account
  • Works seamlessly during autoscaling events
  • Available in all regions where Amazon ECS operates

ECS now simplifies AD authentication for containerized applications by eliminating the requirement to domain-join underlying nodes.
