Amazon Kinesis Data Streams on-demand capacity mode now scales up to 1 GB/second ingest capacity

Blog

This article explains how Amazon Kinesis Data Streams on-demand capacity mode now scales up to 10 GB/s write throughput and 20 GB/s read throughput per stream, a 5x increase from previous limits.

  • On-demand mode automatically scales without manual shard provisioning or management
  • Default provisioning starts with 4 shards (4 MB/s write, 8 MB/s read capacity)
  • Shards split when average utilization reaches 50% over 1 minute; scaling takes up to 15 minutes
  • Baseline throughput >4 MB/s requires pre-provisioning shards before converting to on-demand
  • Significant traffic spikes may cause throttling; switch to provisioned mode temporarily if needed
  • Single partition keys limited to 1 MB/s; poor partition key selection causes persistent throttling
  • Pay only for consumed throughput, not provisioned resources

Kinesis on-demand mode suits unpredictable workloads and eliminates capacity management overhead, now supporting enterprise-scale streaming at 10 GB/s.
