Providing durable storage for AWS Outposts servers using AWS Snowcone

Blog

This article explains how to use AWS Snowcone to provide persistent, durable storage for EC2 instances running on AWS Outposts servers, with optional data replication to AWS Regions.

  • Outposts servers have ephemeral NVMe SSD storage tied to EC2 instance lifecycle
  • Snowcone provides external NFS mount point for persistent storage beyond instance termination
  • DataSync Agent on Snowcone replicates data to Amazon S3 in AWS Regions
  • EC2 instances mount Snowcone NFS via Outposts server's Logical Network Interface
  • Linux instances use mount commands in user data; Windows uses NET USE command
  • Solution works with Snowcone or Snowball Edge Storage Optimized devices
  • Enables data persistence, regional backup, and ML training on replicated data

This approach combines Snowcone's edge storage with DataSync replication to create resilient, persistent storage for Outposts server deployments in space and power-constrained environments.
