Amazon ECS announces managed instance draining
News
The article announces a new capability called managed instance draining for Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) that facilitates graceful shutdown of workloads deployed on Amazon EC2 instances.
Specifically, the article covers:
- Managed instance draining allows for safely stopping and rescheduling workloads to other instances during infrastructure maintenance tasks like rolling out a new Amazon Machine Image (AMI) version
- This eliminates the need for customers to build custom solutions for graceful instance shutdown
- It works with Amazon ECS Capacity Providers and Auto Scaling groups to manage instance scaling and termination
- Instances are only terminated after running tasks have been safely stopped and rescheduled (up to 48 hours)
- This new capability is available in all AWS Regions and can be used with features like Instance Refresh and maximum instance lifetime
