Amazon EMR support prioritized and capacity-optimized-prioritized allocation strategies for EC2 instances

News

The article announces two new allocation strategies for Amazon EMR Instance Fleets on EC2: prioritized for On-Demand instances and capacity-optimized-prioritized for Spot instances. These strategies give more control and flexibility when provisioning instances for EMR workloads.

Specifically, the article covers:

  • The prioritized strategy allows specifying a priority order for instance types, with EMR attempting to provision capacity from the highest priority first
  • For On-Demand instances, EMR fulfills capacity strictly by priority order
  • For Spot instances, EMR optimizes for capacity first but honors priorities on a best-effort basis
  • These features are available in all AWS regions for EMR 5.x and later releases (excluding 5.0.0 and 5.0.3)
  • Customers can configure these strategies through various AWS interfaces like the API, CLI, SDK, console, and CloudFormation
