Accelerate your migration to Amazon OpenSearch Service with Reindexing-from-Snapshot

Big Data Blog

AWS has introduced a new mechanism called Reindexing-from-Snapshot (RFS) to simplify migration to Amazon OpenSearch Service. This method addresses critical concerns for production workload migrations.

  • Minimizes performance impact on source clusters by using snapshots for migration
  • Enables high-throughput data transfer by processing shards in parallel
  • Supports multi-version upgrades across major OpenSearch/Elasticsearch versions
  • Can migrate large datasets quickly (5 TiB in approximately 35 minutes)
  • Preserves original document identifiers during migration

RFS is part of the Migration Assistant solution, offering a straightforward, cost-effective approach to migrating OpenSearch and Elasticsearch clusters to Amazon OpenSearch Service.
