Operationalizing SAS on AWS with the American College of Radiology

Public Sector Blog

The American College of Radiology (ACR) transformed its data processing infrastructure by migrating from an on-premises SAS solution to AWS cloud services, achieving significant improvements in performance and cost-efficiency.

  • Previous on-premises solution processed 3 TB of data in 6-8 hours with limited scalability
  • New AWS solution leverages Amazon S3, AWS Glue, and Amazon Athena for data processing
  • Data is uploaded to S3, cataloged by AWS Glue, and converted to Parquet format
  • Achieved nearly 10x data compression and 100x query performance improvement
  • Reduced query times from 1.5 hours to less than a minute
  • Realized threefold cost savings compared to on-premises infrastructure

The migration allows ACR to process over 100 TB of data more efficiently, with plans to further optimize their analytics processes in a Phase 2 implementation using Amazon SageMaker R Kernel.
