Announcing Bottlerocket FIPS variants

AWS has announced the availability of Bottlerocket FIPS variants, a new version of their container-optimized Linux distribution with enhanced security features compliant with FIPS 140-3 standards.

  • FIPS 140-3 validated cryptographic modules are pre-configured
  • FIPS mode is enabled at the kernel level by default
  • Automatic resolution to FIPS-supported Amazon ECR endpoints
  • Default API setting of `use_fips_endpoint=true`
  • Uses Amazon Linux 2023 Kernel Crypto API Cryptographic Module

The announcement provides detailed instructions for accessing Bottlerocket instances and verifying FIPS mode is enabled, emphasizing enhanced security for container environments in government and regulated industries.
