How Open Universities Australia modernized their data platform and significantly reduced their ETL costs with AWS Cloud Development Kit and AWS Step Functions
Big Data Blog
Open Universities Australia (OUA) modernized their data platform by migrating from a third-party ETL tool to AWS services, achieving significant cost reductions and improved operational efficiency.
- Used AWS services including Step Functions, Redshift, AWS Glue, Lambda, and AppFlow
- Implemented a modular, cost-effective architecture with minimal disruption to existing processes
- Developed four key data pipeline patterns:
- Data transformation and load/unload
- Data replication using AWS Glue
- Data integration with Amazon AppFlow
- Reverse ETL for exporting data to external systems
- Migration took 5 months and was primarily completed by one full-time employee
- Achieved substantial cost savings compared to previous third-party ETL tool
The new architecture provides greater visibility, easier maintenance, and improved scalability for OUA's data operations.
