Measuring Brain Injury in Critically Ill Children: How AI Helps Enable Early Detection

Industries Blog

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Children's Hospital partnered with AWS to develop BRAIN AI, an innovative solution for early detection of brain injuries in critically ill children using advanced machine learning and electronic health record (EHR) data.

  • Detects potential brain injury before physical symptoms emerge
  • Uses AWS services like S3, HealthLake, SageMaker, and Batch to process and analyze medical data
  • Converts CSV medical data to FHIR R4 format for analysis
  • Supports both batch and real-time inference of brain injury risk
  • Ensures data security through HIPAA-eligible services and encryption

The proof-of-concept demonstrates how advanced analytics and machine learning can potentially transform pediatric critical care by enabling early intervention and more accurate treatment.
