Optimizing stateful storage lifecycle on AWS with Kubernetes and Salesforce

Storage Blog

This article discusses how Salesforce and AWS optimized stateful storage lifecycle management in Kubernetes environments, focusing on reducing costs from orphaned storage volumes.

  • Orphaned storage volumes were causing millions of dollars in unnecessary costs
  • Salesforce implemented two strategies to address the issue:
    • Custom automation for pre-Kubernetes 1.27 environments
    • Native Kubernetes auto-delete feature for newer environments
  • Key solution involves configuring PersistentVolumeClaim (PVC) retention policies:
    • Can delete PVCs when StatefulSet is deleted or scaled down
    • Requires both StatefulSet and StorageClass to have 'Delete' policy

The approach helps organizations automatically manage storage lifecycle, reduce unnecessary costs, and maintain efficient Kubernetes deployments.
