Amazon EMR now supports enhanced Apache Spark capabilities for Lake Formation tables by enabling full table access for read and write operations.

  • Enables DML operations like CREATE, ALTER, DELETE, UPDATE on Apache Hive and Iceberg tables
  • Removes previous fine-grained access control (FGAC) limitations for ETL workloads
  • Supports advanced Spark capabilities including RDDs, custom libraries, UDFs, and custom images
  • Allows running complex Spark applications through SageMaker Unified Studio
  • Maintains table-level security boundaries
  • Available in all AWS Regions supporting EMR and Lake Formation

This enhancement simplifies data manipulation and provides more flexibility for data teams working with Lake Formation tables in Apache Spark environments.
