How Nexthink built real-time alerts with Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink

Big Data Blog

Nexthink, a digital employee experience platform, developed a new real-time alerting system using Amazon Managed Service for Apache Flink to address scalability and performance challenges in their existing alerting infrastructure.

  • Previous system polled databases every 15 minutes, causing heavy database load
  • New system processes VDI data in near real-time, with events ingested every 30 seconds
  • Chose Apache Flink over Kafka Streams for better scalability and event-time processing
  • Implemented two Flink applications: one for calculating baselines and another for generating alerts
  • Benefits include easier configuration, flexible topic joining, and improved performance

The solution enables Nexthink to detect and respond to VDI performance issues more quickly and accurately, with plans to expand Flink usage across more services.
