Fluent Commerce’s approach to near-zero downtime Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL upgrade at 32 TB scale using snapshots and AWS DMS ongoing replication

Database Blog

Fluent Commerce successfully upgraded their 32 TB Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL database with near-zero downtime using a strategic approach involving AWS services. The key objectives were to migrate to AWS Graviton instances and upgrade from PostgreSQL version 10.14 to 12.4 and higher.

  • Used snapshot restore and AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) for seamless migration
  • Configured replication slots and created two replication sets to track database changes
  • Migrated over 350 production databases with minimal disruption
  • Leveraged AWS DMS for continuous data replication and change data capture (CDC)
  • Implemented comprehensive validation and monitoring scripts to ensure data integrity

The migration approach allowed Fluent Commerce to upgrade their databases efficiently, improve performance with Graviton instances, and maintain uninterrupted service for their global ecommerce customers.
