Introducing Seekable OCI Parallel Pull mode for Amazon EKS

Containers Blog

AWS has introduced Seekable OCI (SOCI) Parallel Pull mode for Amazon EKS, a new technology designed to dramatically improve container image pull performance, especially for large AI/ML workloads.

  • Addresses container image pull performance bottlenecks by enabling parallel downloading and unpacking of image layers
  • Can reduce image pull times by up to 60%, from nearly 2 minutes to around 45 seconds for large 10 GB images
  • Uses multiple concurrent HTTP connections to download layer chunks simultaneously
  • Enables parallel layer unpacking across multiple CPU cores
  • Configurable parameters allow fine-tuning for specific workload requirements

SOCI Parallel Pull Mode is particularly beneficial for AI/ML workloads with large, complex container images, providing faster container startup times and improved operational efficiency on Amazon EKS.
