BASF Digital Farming builds a STAC-based solution on Amazon EKS

Architecture Blog

BASF Digital Farming developed a scalable geospatial data solution on AWS using the STAC (SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog) specification and eoAPI ecosystem to manage massive amounts of agricultural imagery and data.

  • Uses Amazon EKS for core computing with containerized services for metadata, raster, and vector data
  • Stores geospatial assets in Amazon S3 using Cloud Optimized GeoTIFFs (COGs)
  • Utilizes PostgreSQL with pgSTAC on Amazon RDS for efficient metadata management
  • Implements Kubernetes Event-Driven Autoscaling (KEDA) for dynamic scaling
  • Enables processing of hundreds of millions of satellite images with rapid data onboarding

The solution cuts data handling costs by 50% and doubles daily data processing capabilities, providing farmers with actionable agronomic insights through efficient geospatial data management.
