How APHL transforms public health data exchange with AWS to save newborn lives

Public Sector Blog

The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) developed Detor, an electronic test order and result (ETOR) solution using AWS, to transform public health data exchange and improve newborn screening processes.

  • Processed over 60,000 newborn screening test orders across 25 hospitals and 4 public health laboratories
  • Reduced hospital result processing time by 92%, from 6 minutes to 0.5 minutes per result
  • Enables hospitals to receive newborn screening results almost 4 days faster than previous methods
  • Utilizes multiple AWS services including EC2, S3, SQS, RDS, Lambda, and EKS
  • Eliminates manual processes like paper forms, PDFs, and fax machines

The project, supported by an AWS Imagine Grant, demonstrates how cloud technology can dramatically improve public health data exchange and potentially save newborn lives through faster, more efficient testing and intervention.
