Network Load Balancers now support Weighted Target Groups

Networking & Content Delivery Blog

This article announces weighted target groups for AWS Network Load Balancers (NLB), enabling traffic distribution control across multiple target groups without multiple load balancers.

  • Assign numeric weights (0-999) to NLB target groups for traffic steering
  • Supports blue/green and canary deployments with zero downtime
  • Reduces infrastructure costs and operational overhead versus multiple NLBs
  • Available now on new and existing NLBs in all commercial regions
  • Enables target group maintenance by setting weights to zero
  • All target groups in listener must use same protocol (TCP or TLS)
  • Stickiness supported at listener level for TCP, UDP, TCP_UDP
  • CloudWatch metrics now viewable per-target group basis
  • Weighted routing evaluation feature helps identify configuration inconsistencies

Weighted target groups simplify traffic management for NLBs, eliminating need for Route 53 weight management and multiple load balancers.
