Amazon ECS now supports custom container stop signals on AWS Fargate

News

This article announces that Amazon ECS now supports custom container stop signals for Linux tasks on AWS Fargate, enabling graceful shutdown aligned with container preferences.

  • ECS reads STOPSIGNAL from OCI container images during task termination
  • Containers can use SIGQUIT, SIGINT, or other signals instead of default SIGTERM
  • Improves graceful shutdown behavior for containers with specific termination requirements
  • Defaults to SIGTERM if no STOPSIGNAL is configured in the image
  • Available in all AWS Regions immediately

This enhancement allows containers to terminate gracefully using their configured stop signals, improving application shutdown behavior on Fargate.
