Simplify network segmentation for AWS Outposts racks with multiple local gateway routing domains

Compute Blog

This article announces support for multiple local gateway (LGW) routing domains on AWS Outposts racks to simplify network segmentation and enable flexible routing configurations.

  • Multiple LGW routing domains enable network traffic isolation across subnetworks on Outposts racks
  • Supports up to 10 active routing domains with DVR or CoIP routing modes mixed
  • Each routing domain has unique LGW Virtual Interface Group and Route Table
  • VLANs can be associated with routing domains for logical network separation
  • Feature available only on second-generation Outposts racks
  • Allows both customer-owned IP (CoIP) and direct VPC routing (DVR) on same Outpost
  • VPCs can associate with one or more routing domains for flexibility
  • Avoids overlapping IP addresses to prevent routing conflicts

This feature enables regulated industries to implement network segmentation on-premises while maintaining cloud service compatibility and operational flexibility.
