Amazon OpenSearch Service introduces capacity optimized blue/green deployments
News
This article announces a new Capacity Optimized option for Amazon OpenSearch Service blue/green deployments, enabling domain updates with reduced instance capacity requirements.
- Capacity Optimized deployments use incremental batches instead of requiring 100% upfront capacity
- Automatically falls back to batch deployment if full capacity unavailable
- Full Swap option remains default for fastest deployment with full capacity
- Batch size determined automatically based on cluster and available instances
- Recommended for clusters with 30 or more nodes
- Available for all OpenSearch and Elasticsearch versions across all AWS regions
This feature reduces operational friction by allowing domain updates to proceed even when full instance capacity isn't immediately available, though batch deployments may take longer.
