Introducing enhanced capacity auto scaling for Amazon GameLift Streams

AWS for Games Blog

This article announces enhanced auto scaling capabilities for Amazon GameLift Streams, enabling faster stream availability and intelligent cost optimization through three new parameters: target idle capacity, minimum capacity, and maximum capacity.

  • Target idle capacity maintains a warm pool of ready streams for instant user access
  • Minimum capacity ensures baseline resources always available for predictable demand
  • Maximum capacity sets upper limit to prevent runaway scaling and control costs
  • New system replaces previous binary always-on versus on-demand approach
  • Idle capacity refills asynchronously within 2-5 minutes depending on OS
  • Stream requests prioritize idle slots before scaling up new resources
  • Available now in AWS Management Console and GameLift Streams APIs
  • Existing stream groups continue working with current configurations

The enhanced auto scaling provides granular control over streaming capacity, balancing user experience responsiveness with cost efficiency without manual monitoring or complex scaling logic.
