Launching S3 Files, making S3 buckets accessible as file systems

AWS News Blog

This article announces Amazon S3 Files, a new file system that enables AWS compute resources to access S3 buckets as native file systems with NFS v4.1+ support.

  • S3 buckets now accessible as file systems from EC2, ECS, EKS, and Lambda
  • Supports standard file operations: create, read, update, delete with automatic S3 synchronization
  • High-performance storage with ~1ms latencies for active data using Amazon EFS
  • Intelligent pre-fetching and fine-grained control over data caching strategies
  • Multiple compute resources can share data without duplication via NFS close-to-open consistency
  • IAM integration for access control; encryption in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest
  • POSIX permissions support with UID/GID validation against object metadata
  • Monitoring via CloudWatch metrics and CloudTrail logging
  • Available in all commercial AWS Regions; pricing based on stored data, operations, and S3 requests

S3 Files eliminates the traditional tradeoff between S3's durability and cost benefits versus file system interactivity, enabling shared, interactive workloads for AI agents, ML training, and production applications.
