Announcing Kubernetes Dynamic Resource Allocation for Elastic Fabric Adapter
News
This article announces Kubernetes Dynamic Resource Allocation (DRA) support for Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) on Amazon EKS, enabling optimized high-performance networking for AI, ML, and HPC workloads.
- EFA DRA driver simplifies inter-node communication and RDMA for distributed workloads
- Topology-aware allocation ensures traffic flows through closest network interface to accelerators
- Supports EFA interface sharing across workloads on same node for better utilization
- Requires Kubernetes 1.34+ on EKS managed or self-managed node groups
- Available in all AWS Regions where Amazon EKS operates
- Legacy EFA device plugin remains supported for Karpenter and EKS Auto Mode
The EFA DRA driver improves resource efficiency and performance for Kubernetes-based AI/ML and HPC applications by enabling intelligent device allocation and sharing.
