Building highly available Oracle databases with Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP

Architecture Blog

This article describes a highly available Oracle database architecture using Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, AWS Backup, Lambda, and Auto Scaling groups for automated failover and configuration consistency.

  • FSxN Multi-AZ provides persistent shared storage with synchronous replication across availability zones
  • AWS Backup creates AMIs capturing latest Oracle configurations including patches and settings
  • Lambda extracts AMI IDs from backup recovery points and updates Systems Manager Parameter Store
  • Auto Scaling groups use Parameter Store to dynamically resolve latest AMI at instance launch time
  • User Data scripts automate iSCSI configuration, storage mounting, and Oracle database startup
  • Achieves 2-5 minute RTO with near-zero RPO through Multi-AZ synchronous replication
  • Self-healing pattern detects unhealthy instances and launches replacements automatically
  • New instances immediately access existing Oracle database files on shared FSxN storage

This architecture eliminates traditional Oracle HA complexity by combining cloud-native services for automated failover, configuration consistency, and enterprise-grade availability without manual intervention.
