Amazon S3 adds annotations, a new metadata capability that lets you attach custom business context directly to S3 objects at massive scale for AI agents and analytics tools.
- Attach up to 1GB of custom metadata per object in JSON, XML, or YAML format
- Modify or delete annotations anytime to keep context current as data evolves
- Annotations move with objects during copy and replication operations
- Query annotations at scale using S3 Metadata with Amazon Athena and Iceberg-compatible tools
- Search objects by annotations using natural language in Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio
- Available in all AWS Regions including AWS China Regions
Annotations enable applications and AI agents to discover and understand data without maintaining separate metadata systems.
