Amazon ECS introduces new high-resolution metrics for faster service auto scaling

AWS News Blog

Amazon ECS now supports high-resolution metrics for faster service auto scaling, improving response times to workload demand changes.

  • High-resolution 20-second metrics enable 76% faster scale-out (363s to 86s) and 72% faster task provisioning (386s to 109s)
  • New ECSServiceAverageCPUUtilizationHighResolution and ECSServiceAverageMemoryUtilizationHighResolution metrics available
  • Works across AWS Fargate, ECS Managed Instances, and Amazon EC2 compute options
  • Enable via ECS console Monitoring configuration section or AWS CLI/CloudFormation
  • Reduces baseline task counts and compute costs while maintaining performance and availability
  • High-resolution metrics incur additional CloudWatch costs; feature itself is free

Faster auto scaling with high-resolution metrics is now available, simplifying scaling configuration and improving application responsiveness to traffic spikes.
