How Rize Credit Union built a serverless data lake on AWS to become its own source of truth

Public Sector Blog

This article describes how Rize Credit Union built a serverless data lake on AWS to consolidate fragmented data sources and become a single source of truth for analytics.

  • Replaced scattered data across Symitar, Talkdesk, and shared drives with unified S3-based medallion architecture
  • Used AWS Glue, Step Functions, EventBridge, and DynamoDB for serverless ingestion, transformation, and orchestration
  • Implemented Apache Iceberg tables for ACID transactions and storage efficiency through change tracking
  • Deployed OpenMetadata for governance, PII tagging, and business-user-friendly data discovery
  • Achieved zero standing compute with resumable, lossless loads using CDC and DynamoDB state tracking
  • Maintained by two-person data engineering team serving a $1.5B credit union

The serverless, managed-service approach enabled a small team to focus on member value rather than infrastructure, with architecture designed for future real-time ingestion and AI-driven analytics.
