Amazon ECR now supports image layers up to 200 GB

News

Amazon ECR has increased the maximum image layer size limit to 200 GB for images pushed via Docker push, simplifying container packaging for large workloads.

  • Maximum image layer size increased from previous limit to 200 GB via Docker push
  • Eliminates need to split large assets across multiple layers or use external storage
  • Supports use cases like embedding large language models and genomics datasets
  • AWS SDK/CLI uploads (UploadLayerPart API) remain limited to 50 GB
  • Available in all AWS Regions except Middle East (Bahrain) and Middle East (UAE)

This update reduces complexity for customers packaging large dependencies directly into container images.
