AWS Supports Agent Plugins: An Open Standard for Portable Agent Extensions

Open Source Blog

This article announces AWS support for Agent Plugins 1.0.0, an open-source, vendor-neutral specification for packaging AI agent extensions with a common format.

  • Agent Plugins standardizes packaging for Agent Skills and MCP servers, enabling portability across clients like Kiro, Claude Code, VS Code, and Cursor
  • AWS is a founding member of the Agent Plugins Technical Steering Committee alongside Cursor, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel
  • AWS Agent Toolkit and Kiro now support the Agent Plugins spec for seamless extension installation
  • Open standards prevent vendor lock-in and give developers flexibility to compose and migrate workloads independently
  • Specification defines essential components for interoperability while allowing clients to differentiate through proprietary capabilities
  • Future versions will support additional extension types like hooks and custom agents

Agent Plugins removes fragmentation in agent extension packaging, enabling extension authors to package once and deploy across any compliant client.
