Faster scaling for Aurora serverless to support agentic AI and other spiky workloads

Database Blog

This article announces faster scaling improvements for Aurora serverless, enabling it to add 12 Aurora Capacity Units (ACUs) within a second to handle sudden workload spikes from agentic AI, SaaS batch jobs, and viral traffic.

  • Aurora serverless now scales 12 ACUs in under one second, continuing to 256 ACUs as demand grows
  • Instant scaling is non-disruptive with no query stalls during capacity transitions
  • Improvement enabled by default on platform versions 3 and 4 with no configuration required
  • Benchmark shows Aurora serverless matches provisioned db.r8g.xlarge performance after ~1 minute of scaling
  • Automatically scales to zero capacity when idle, charging only for used capacity

Aurora serverless delivers provisioned-class performance for unpredictable workloads without managing fixed capacity or paying for idle resources.
