Disaster Recovery for VMware Workloads on Amazon EVS

This article provides a comprehensive six-phase guide for implementing disaster recovery solutions for VMware workloads using Amazon Elastic VMware Service (Amazon EVS).

  • Define DR objectives including RTO, RPO, scope, geography, and budget before building infrastructure
  • Choose from four strategies: Cold (on-demand), Pilot Light (minimal), Warm Standby (partial), or Hot (active) based on business needs
  • Create recovery environment by selecting AWS Region, EC2 bare-metal instance, and VMware Cloud Foundation version
  • Mirror production configuration using code-driven network replication or NSX Federation for networking consistency
  • Protect workloads using hypervisor-level replication (VCF, Veeam), storage-level replication (FSx for NetApp ONTAP), or scheduled backups (AWS Backup)
  • Perform switchover via DNS updates and test DR plans regularly to identify drift and validate RTO targets

Amazon EVS enables flexible, scalable disaster recovery without upfront hardware investment, allowing organizations to start small and grow their protection strategy incrementally.
