AWS and DuckLabs: Building the future of analytics together

Amazon has announced the acquisition of DuckLabs, the company behind the open-source analytical database DuckDB, with founders Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt continuing to lead the project.

  • DuckDB optimizes performance for everyday SQL queries on datasets of 1 terabyte or less, addressing 90%+ of real-world data queries
  • The open-source project remains under MIT license and governed by an independent foundation
  • DuckDB's in-process architecture and vectorized execution enable fast performance for analytics, dashboarding, and AI agent interactions
  • AWS plans to integrate DuckDB with S3, Redshift, Athena, EMR, and other analytics services for enterprise-scale capabilities
  • Amazon Quick dashboard engine reduced query latency by 30% using DuckDB integrations after processing 2.5B queries since October 2025
  • Allen Institute uses DuckDB to analyze terabytes of scientific data with sub-second query response times

The acquisition combines DuckDB's efficiency for small-to-medium queries with AWS's proven exabyte-scale enterprise analytics infrastructure.
