Enabling a new AWS Region for financial services enterprises

Industries Blog

This article provides a structured framework for financial services enterprises to enable a new AWS Region while meeting regulatory requirements and managing complex dependencies across governance, security, networking, and operations.

  • Obtain governance approval and validate service availability before technical work begins
  • Enable CloudTrail, GuardDuty, Security Hub, and third-party security tools before deploying workloads
  • Plan IP address space, order Direct Connect connections, and deploy Transit Gateway or Cloud WAN connectivity
  • Configure Route 53 Resolver endpoints and establish DNS naming conventions supporting multi-Region operation
  • Extend AMI image factory and deploy CI/CD runners in the new Region
  • Replicate CloudWatch alarms, backup vaults, log pipelines, and update service quotas proactively
  • Follow strict dependency order: governance → security → networking → DNS → compute → operations
  • Treat Region enablement as cross-functional program with single owner and weekly coordination

Successful Region expansion requires methodical planning across eight workstreams, dependency mapping, and early engagement with AWS specialists to strengthen resilience and meet regulatory obligations.
