Build observable enterprise agentic retrieval using Managed Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Base with AWS CloudFormation

Machine Learning Blog

This article demonstrates building an enterprise agentic retrieval solution using Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Bases with semantic routing across multiple knowledge bases, integrated observability, and evaluation capabilities deployed via AWS CloudFormation.

  • Agent reasons about questions and routes them to appropriate knowledge bases using semantic routing
  • Managed Knowledge Bases handle multi-step agentic retrieval with iterative decomposition and cited answers
  • AgentCore Gateway exposes knowledge bases as MCP tools with no Lambda or container overhead
  • Seven observability layers track KB health, ingestion, retrieval quality, gateway performance, span traces, token usage, and evaluation scores
  • Solution includes two CloudWatch dashboards and both on-demand and continuous (online) evaluation using LLM-as-judge
  • Four CloudFormation stacks deploy knowledge bases, gateway, agent runtime, and dashboards in one command
  • Includes synthetic financial and weather corpora demonstrating cross-KB routing and semantic retrieval

The solution enables production-ready agentic retrieval with built-in observability and evaluation, eliminating vector database management while supporting complex multi-source question answering.
