Amazon EMR introduces Long Term Support (LTS) releases, starting with emr-spark-8.1.0 and Apache Spark 4.1, providing 36 months of support for production workloads.
- LTS releases receive fixes for critical and high severity security, bug, and data-corruption issues at no additional cost
- Full support for Apache Iceberg v3 with geospatial, high-precision timestamp, and schema-evolution capabilities
- Spark SQL queries can reference catalogs by name across accounts and automatically detect Iceberg, Delta Lake, and Hudi formats
- Fine-grained access control expanded to more Iceberg operations and Delta Lake VACUUM
- Amazon EMR on EKS now supports Spark Connect endpoints with token-based authentication
- Available across EMR on EC2, EMR on EKS, and EMR Serverless in all AWS Regions
