AWS European Sovereign Cloud: Demonstrating an independent operation

Security Blog

This article announces an exercise demonstrating the AWS European Sovereign Cloud's independent operation without relying on non-EU infrastructure.

  • On October 24, 2026, AWS European Sovereign Cloud will disconnect from the AWS Global Network backbone for several hours
  • Traffic will securely reroute over public internet using dedicated European ISP connectivity
  • Operational team composed entirely of EU residents will execute the exercise using only EU-based resources
  • Exercise demonstrates compliance with EU Cloud Sovereignty Framework and Germany's C3A framework criteria
  • Customer content and metadata remain in the EU; only limited operational data transfers outside
  • Brief connectivity disruptions may occur during traffic rerouting at exercise start and end
  • Service availability unaffected for AWS European Sovereign Cloud and other AWS Regions

The exercise provides verifiable evidence of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud's operational independence and sovereignty assurance for regulated EU customers and public sector organizations.
