Restart EC2 and on-premises fleets faster with AWS CodeDeploy RESTART deployment mode

DevOps & Developer Productivity Blog

AWS CodeDeploy introduces RESTART deployment mode, a purpose-built option for restarting EC2 and on-premises fleets that reapplies the last successful revision while maintaining all safety controls.

  • RESTART deployment mode completes up to 6.1x faster than standard deployments by reusing local revision archives
  • Retains deployment configurations, lifecycle hooks, CloudWatch alarm monitoring, rollback settings, and deployment history
  • Supports batch sizing, health checks, and automatic rollback behavior identical to standard deployments
  • Enables automated remediation loops using CloudWatch alarms and EventBridge to trigger self-healing restarts
  • Available for EC2 and on-premises in-place deployments; requires at least one successful prior deployment
  • Set deploymentMode to RESTART via CreateDeployment API without specifying a revision
  • Traffic control steps (BlockTraffic/AllowTraffic) are skipped; applications must handle graceful shutdown
  • Supports deployment configuration overrides and alarm monitoring disabling for incident recovery scenarios

RESTART provides a managed, auditable alternative to custom restart scripts, keeping fleet operations within CodeDeploy's safety guardrails and deployment history.
