How UTS established a modern curriculum data services foundation on AWS

Architecture Blog

This article describes how the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) established a modern curriculum data services foundation on AWS using domain-driven design and managed services.

  • Replaced tightly coupled integrations with governed API contracts using Amazon MSK, Lambda, and API Gateway
  • Implemented purpose-built persistence with Amazon Neptune for graph traversal and OpenSearch for semantic search
  • Achieved 1.6-second average latency from source system to downstream consumers
  • One engineer operates the domain with zero production incidents since November 2024 launch
  • 11 institutional consumers adopted the services, replacing point-to-point integrations
  • Reduced total cost of ownership while consolidating capabilities across multiple teams
  • Established repeatable pattern for subsequent data domains like student data and learning activities

UTS demonstrated how managed AWS services enable small engineering teams to operate institutional-scale data domains with increased capability, reduced complexity, and demand-aligned costs.
