Securing AI agent identity with X.509 PKI on AWS
Machine Learning Blog
This article presents a reference architecture for securing AI agent communications using X.509 PKI with Keyfactor EJBCA and AWS services to establish cryptographic identity and prevent agent impersonation.
- Implements four security mechanisms: signed request envelopes for proof-of-possession, user-signed delegation assertions for credential-free authorization, RFC 8693 audience-scoped tokens for exposure limitation, and real-time OCSP revocation checking
- Three-layer authentication architecture: user authentication with OAuth and X.509 certificates, agent-to-agent communication with signed envelopes, and MCP server authentication with token introspection and delegation verification
- Client-side key generation ensures private keys never leave the application boundary or are transmitted to external systems
- Replay prevention uses unique per-request nonces and 60-second freshness windows to prevent request replay attacks
- Revocation cascade immediately invalidates all downstream agent authority by revoking a single user certificate through real-time OCSP checks
- Framework-agnostic patterns apply to LangChain, CrewAI, AutoGen, and other multi-agent frameworks using tool protocols
The architecture provides defense-in-depth security for multi-agent AI systems by combining cryptographic identity, delegation chains, and real-time revocation to prevent unauthorized access and agent impersonation.
