Architect highly available Oracle Database on Amazon EVS and FSx for ONTAP
Architecture Blog
This article describes how to architect a highly available Oracle Database environment on Amazon EVS with FSx for NetApp ONTAP, including storage, compute, networking, and disaster recovery design patterns.
- Design Oracle Database on Amazon EVS running VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1 with i7i bare metal instances
- Use Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP as NFS datastores for Oracle data and log volumes with sub-millisecond latency
- Implement SnapMirror replication for cross-region disaster recovery with configurable RPO
- Split storage between vSAN (local NVMe for OS/temp) and FSx for ONTAP (persistent database files)
- Migrate existing Oracle workloads using HCX live migration, SnapMirror ONTAP-to-ONTAP, PDB relocation, or RMAN backup/restore
- Apply NSX-T micro-segmentation, AWS KMS encryption, and zero-trust access for security
- Optimize costs using Compute Savings Plans, right-sized throughput, and Oracle licensing compliance strategies
This architecture delivers high availability, cross-region DR, and storage-based backup capabilities while maintaining familiar VMware operational tooling and procedures.
