Announcing fine-grained access control via AWS Lake Formation with EMR Serverless

News

The article announces the general availability of fine-grained data access control (FGAC) via AWS Lake Formation for Apache Spark with Amazon EMR Serverless. This enables enforcing full FGAC policies (database, table, column, row, and cell-level) defined in Lake Formation for data lake tables accessed from EMR Serverless Spark jobs and interactive sessions.

Specifically, the article covers:

  • Lake Formation simplifies building, securing, and managing data lakes by allowing definition of fine-grained access controls similar to RDBMS
  • Lake Formation policies are automatically enforced for compatible engines like Athena, Spark on EMR on EC2, and Redshift Spectrum
  • With this launch, the same Lake Formation rules set up for Athena now apply to Spark jobs and interactive sessions on EMR Serverless
  • The feature is available with EMR 7.2 release in regions where EMR Serverless is available, except GovCloud and China regions
