Cross-zone enabled Application Load Balancer now supports zonal shift and zonal autoshift

News

AWS has enhanced Application Load Balancers (ALB) with zonal shift and zonal autoshift capabilities for cross-zone enabled load balancers.

  • Zonal shift allows manual traffic redirection away from an impaired Availability Zone (AZ)
  • Zonal autoshift automatically shifts traffic when AWS identifies potential AZ issues
  • Works with cross-zone load balancers to maintain even traffic distribution
  • Blocks traffic to targets in the impacted AZ and removes zonal IP from DNS
  • Available in all commercial AWS Regions, including AWS GovCloud (US)

To implement, users must enable zonal shift configuration and then trigger shift/autoshift via AWS Application Recovery Controller console or API.
