Using RDS Proxy with Amazon RDS Multi-AZ DB instance deployment to improve planned failover time

Database Blog

This article discusses how Amazon RDS Proxy can improve planned failover times for Multi-AZ database deployments across MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL.

  • RDS Proxy eliminates the 35-second DNS propagation delay during failovers
  • Optimizations were made to reduce downtime during different maintenance operations
  • Benchmarking showed significant improvements in failover performance:
    • Up to 4.9X reduction in instance class modification downtime
    • Up to 4.8X reduction in OS upgrade downtime
    • Up to 3X reduction in forced failover downtime

The improvements are automatically available for RDS MySQL, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL instances, requiring no additional configuration from users.
