Compute Blog

AWS Step Functions introduces an enhanced local IDE experience for building state machines within Visual Studio Code through the AWS Toolkit extension.

  • Workflow Studio now available in VS Code with visual workflow design capabilities
  • Supports drag-and-drop state machine creation with automatic Amazon States Language (ASL) updates
  • Compatible with JSON and YAML state machine definition files
  • Offers Design and Code modes for workflow development
  • Supports TestState API for testing individual states without creating full state machines
  • Integrated with Infrastructure as Code tools like AWS CloudFormation and AWS CDK
  • Enables seamless workflow development directly in the local IDE

This update simplifies workflow development by providing a consistent, visual authoring experience across AWS Console and VS Code.
