Amazon Kinesis Data Streams increases default shard limits to up to 20,000 per AWS account

Amazon Kinesis Data Streams has significantly increased its default shard limits, enhancing its data streaming capabilities across multiple regions.

  • Default shard limit increased from 500 to 20,000 per AWS account in US East, US West, and Europe (Ireland) regions
  • Supports processing up to 10 GB/sec ingress and 20 GB/sec egress per account by default
  • Each shard provides 1 MB/sec ingress and 2 MB/sec egress throughput
  • Shard limits in other regions increased from 200 to 1,000 or 6,000 per account
  • Customers can view and request quota increases via AWS Service Quotas console

This enhancement allows customers to build more scalable, real-time data streaming applications with greater throughput and flexibility.
