AWS Lambda standardizes billing for INIT Phase

Compute Blog

AWS is introducing a significant change to AWS Lambda billing, standardizing the billing for the initialization (INIT) phase across all function configurations, effective August 1, 2025.

  • Previously, INIT phase duration was not billed for functions using managed runtimes with ZIP packaging
  • Starting August 1, 2025, INIT phase will be included in billing for all Lambda function configurations
  • Most users will see minimal impact, as INIT phases occur in less than 1% of invocations
  • Developers can optimize INIT phase duration through techniques like: • Reducing package size • Using Lambda SnapStart • Implementing Provisioned Concurrency

The change aims to standardize billing across different runtime types, deployment packages, and invocation modes, providing more transparent and consistent pricing for AWS Lambda users.
